Just seven months after giving birth to her son, Martia became very sick and was admitted to hospital. After being diagnosed with heart failure, Martia underwent an emergency bypass and eventually received a heart transplant. Further diagnosis confirmed she had Peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM).
PPCM cases are low in Canada but can occur during the last month of pregnancy or within the first five months post-partum, affecting as many as 1 in 1,000 women per year. Early diagnosis and proper management remain crucial for improving outcomes for women affected by PPCM.
It's Martia's profound gratitude for the gift of life she received from an organ donor that has given her a newfound appreciation, allowing her to cherish every precious moment with her family and friends.

During her recovery period, Martia began knitting hats to keep herself busy, but now, this pastime has become the greater cause.
Martia is creating awareness about PPCM and organ donation with each loop she knits into her meaningful headwear, and a portion of the sale of each hat goes to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
All hats are handmade with ❤️ made possible by Martia's second chance.
